Bruins Defeat Capitals 3-1: Zacha & Pastrňák Lead the Way | NHL Highlights

March 7, 2026 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

BOSTON – The Boston Bruins extended their impressive home record to 12 consecutive wins on Saturday, defeating the Washington Capitals 3-1 at TD Garden. A strong third-period performance, punctuated by a go-ahead goal from Viktor Arvidsson, sealed the victory for the Bruins.

The game remained scoreless through a tightly contested first period, with both teams struggling to find consistent offensive rhythm. A quartet of minor penalties disrupted any flow, preventing either side from establishing sustained pressure.

Pavel Zacha broke the deadlock at March 7th, 4:07 into the second period, capitalizing on a power-play opportunity. Zacha batted in his own rebound, with David Pastrňák earning an assist – his second since January. However, the Capitals responded quickly, with Aliaksei Protas leveling the score just over three minutes later, scoring from the edge of the crease.

The decisive moment arrived early in the third period. At 4:28, Arvidsson broke free on a breakaway, skillfully slipping a wrist shot past Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson. The goal ignited the TD Garden crowd and shifted the momentum firmly in Boston’s favor.

With the Capitals pressing for an equalizer, and pulling their goalie for an extra attacker, Elias Lindholm added an empty-net goal in the final minute, completing the scoring and securing the 3-1 win. The goal was assisted by Pastrňák, further solidifying his impressive offensive contributions.

Pastrňák finished the game with a goal and two assists, elevating his season total to 74 points – comprised of 22 goals and 52 assists in 57 games. This performance places him among the league’s top ten scorers.

Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman was instrumental in the victory, making 22 saves throughout the game. His performance earned him the first star of the game, with Arvidsson and Charlie McAvoy also recognized for their contributions.

The win strengthens Boston’s position in the playoff race, solidifying their place within the top eight teams in the Eastern Conference. For Washington, the loss marks their third consecutive defeat and leaves them six points behind the playoff cutoff.

The Capitals were playing their first game since trading longtime defenseman John Carlson to Anaheim prior to the trade deadline. The absence of Carlson, who had been with the team for nearly 17 seasons, was reportedly felt in the locker room.

Boston’s current 12-game home winning streak is their longest since a 14-game run during their record-breaking 2022-23 season, when they achieved an NHL-best 65 victories. The Bruins haven’t lost at TD Garden in 2026 since a 6-2 loss to Montreal on December 23rd.

The Bruins and Capitals will meet again in Washington on March 14th, offering Washington an immediate opportunity to avenge this result on home ice.
