The Boston Bruins have tapped Marco Sturm as their next head coach,the team announced Thursday.With this move, every NHL team now has a head coach for the upcoming season. Sturm, a former player and experienced coach, was a leading candidate for the Bruins job.
Sturm’s appointment marks the third coaching change for Boston as November. Jim Montgomery, now with the St. Louis Blues, was fired after a slow start. Interim coach Joe Sacco, an assistant since 2014, took over but the team struggled, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

General Manager Don Sweeney emphasized the search for a coach who could maintain a strong defense while improving the offense. “Marco impressed us at every step with his preparation, clarity, and passion,” Sweeney said, highlighting Sturm’s communication skills and ability to develop young talent.
Sturm played five of his 15 NHL seasons with Boston, notching four 20-goal seasons. He is also credited with helping pave the way for german players in the NHL. Sturm leads all German players in NHL games played and ranks second in points behind Edmonton Oilers star Leon Draisaitl.
After retiring in 2013,Sturm coached Germany’s national teams,leading them to a silver medal at the 2018 Olympics. He then served as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Kings before becoming head coach of their AHL affiliate,the Ontario Reign. Sturm guided the Reign to the playoffs each season.
“I’m incredibly honored to be named head coach of the Boston Bruins,” Sturm said. He thanked team leadership for the prospect, adding, “Boston has always held a special place in my heart, and I know how much this team means to the city and to our fans.”
