New York City is set to host the U.S. Premiere of “Brunello: The Gracious Visionary,” a documentary charting the life and career of Italian fashion designer Brunello Cucinelli, on . Blue Fox Entertainment has acquired the North American distribution rights to the film, with a rollout across more than 100 screens planned for later this spring.
Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore, “Brunello: The Gracious Visionary” traces Cucinelli’s remarkable journey from a farmer’s son in the Umbrian hamlet of Castel Rigone to the creative director and executive chairman of a global luxury brand currently valued at over $7.8 billion. The film isn’t a straightforward biography; it’s presented as a symbolic card game between Cucinelli and a mysterious opponent, an allegory for the challenges and triumphs that have defined his life.
The documentary blends archival footage, cinematic reconstructions, and intimate testimonies to tell Cucinelli’s story. Saul Nanni, known for his role in “Love & Gelato,” portrays a younger version of the designer, while the film’s score is composed by Nicola Piovani, the Oscar-winning composer behind “Life Is Beautiful.”
Cucinelli founded his company in 1978, initially finding success by dyeing cashmere in vibrant colors – a departure from the more traditional palettes available at the time. The film highlights his commitment to “humanistic capitalism,” a philosophy that prioritizes ethical production and fair labor practices. All of his company’s clothing is made in Italy, primarily in the region surrounding his hometown, and workers are treated as valued members of a family. He has also spearheaded the renovation of the village of Solomeo, where his headquarters are located.
The project, largely self-financed by Cucinelli at a cost of $17 million, was driven by a desire to document his life while he was still able to witness its impact. As Cucinelli explained in an interview with Variety, he prefers to be involved in telling his own story, rather than leaving it to posthumous accounts. “These documentaries are made after people have died. Some of the ones I’ve seen are of people that I have known — I don’t like them very much,” he said. “They are not as profound as the value of the human being.”
“Brunello: The Gracious Visionary” is a production of Brunello Cucinelli S.p.A. And MasiFilm, in collaboration with RAI Cinema. The film already enjoyed a successful limited release in Italy, earning over $1 million during its initial seven-day run beginning on .
The Italian premiere was a star-studded event held at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios, attracting prominent figures from the film industry including Jessica Chastain, Jonathan Bailey, Ava DuVernay, Jeff Goldblum, Chris Pine, Édgar Ramírez, and Kyle MacLachlan. The U.S. Premiere is expected to draw a similarly impressive guest list.
Edoardo Bussi, founder and CEO of Twenty-Nine Palms Entertainment, which is handling sales for the film, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Blue Fox Entertainment. He believes Blue Fox’s ability to connect high-quality cinematic storytelling with a broad audience makes them the ideal distributor for bringing Tornatore’s vision to North American audiences. Bussi will continue to promote the film at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin.
Lisa Gutberlet and David Hudakoc of Blue Fox Entertainment echoed Bussi’s sentiment, stating that they are “honored” to partner on the film’s release. They described “Brunello: The Gracious Visionary” as a work that “transcends traditional documentary form,” offering a cinematic exploration of humanism, craftsmanship, and enduring beauty – values they believe are central to cultural and creative excellence.
Blue Fox Entertainment’s recent releases include the German animated feature “Tahiti: Across the Desert,” the sci-fi adventure “Xeno” produced by Kevin Hart, and the survival drama “Lost on a Mountain in Maine” produced by Sylvester Stallone, demonstrating a diverse slate of projects and a commitment to bringing international stories to North American audiences.
“Brunello: The Gracious Visionary” offers a rare glimpse into the mind of a designer who has not only built a global fashion empire but has also prioritized ethical business practices and the well-being of his community. The film’s success in Italy and its upcoming North American release suggest a growing appetite for stories that celebrate craftsmanship, human connection, and a more mindful approach to luxury.
