Erik ten Hag has acknowledged Manchester United still have notable improvements to make despite a largely accomplished pre-season tour of the United States. The manager expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress and the momentum gained, but stressed the need for continued refinement as they prepare for the upcoming Premier League season.
Positive Tour, Realistic Assessment
Ten Hag believes the timing of the tour was ideal, providing valuable time to build a strong team environment and assess players. “I think the momentum of the tour was perfect,” he said. “We had the weeks to work with a good environment, good feeling, and then we go back to Carrington and we are near to start the season. We are going with the feeling that we need to do a lot of things [better].”
He highlighted the importance of players recognizing areas for enhancement, viewing it as a positive sign of their understanding of the challenges ahead. “when players tell you that, it’s a good sign,” Ten Hag explained. ”It’s saying that they understand the situation. So, it’s a good feeling.”
Long-Term Commitment and Ratcliffe Relationship
The Dutch manager reaffirmed his long-term commitment to Manchester United, stating his ambition to remain at the club for two decades. “I want to stay 20 [years]. That is my goal. I truly believe in that.” This declaration underscores his confidence in the project and his desire to build a sustained period of success at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag also praised his working relationship with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the co-owner overseeing football operations. He described Ratcliffe as approachable and receptive to well-reasoned arguments. “It’s really easy to deal with Jim,” he said.”If you know your stuff, how to explain any decision, you’ll be fine. I know he’s the owner of the club,I know my place. But when I need to say something, I’m really direct. I think it’s something he likes a lot.” This open communication and mutual respect are seen as crucial for the club’s future direction.
Preparing for the Premier League Season
The focus now shifts to final preparations at Carrington as Manchester United gear up for the start of the Premier League season. While the US tour provided a valuable foundation, Ten Hag is clear that significant work remains to elevate the team’s performance and achieve their objectives. The manager’s candid assessment suggests a realistic approach, acknowledging both the progress made and the challenges that lie ahead.
