Bruno Fernandes has opened up about his decision to remain at Manchester United despite receiving a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal, explaining that his choice was driven by a desire to continue competing at the highest level in European football.
The Manchester United captain revealed that he rejected a substantial financial proposal from Al Hilal, which would have reportedly quadrupled his current wages, after being contacted by the club’s president a month prior to making his decision.
Fernandes stated that while the offer was “very ambitious” and financially significant, he chose to stay at Old Trafford because he wants to keep playing in major competitions and feels capable of performing at the elite level in Europe.
He credited both manager Ruben Amorim and his wife for influencing his decision, saying they persuaded him to remain by emphasizing his personal goals and the importance of continuing to challenge for trophies.
“I spoke to my wife and family and she asked me what my personal goals were in my career,” Fernandes explained. “It would have been easy to move there but I want to keep myself at the highest level, playing in the big competitions and I feel capable of it.”
The Portugal international also clarified that he would have considered leaving if Manchester United had indicated a willingness to sell him, but the club made it clear they would only allow a departure if he initiated it.
“The club said they would not be willing to sell me, only if I wanted to leave. If I had wanted to leave, they would have made it happen,” Fernandes said, adding that Amorim had repeatedly urged him to stay during their conversations.
Fernandes, who has been with Manchester United for five-and-a-half years, has won the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup during his time at the club and expressed hope for further success under the current management.
His decision comes amid ongoing interest from Saudi Pro League clubs in high-profile European players, but Fernandes emphasized that his ambition remains tied to competing in Europe’s premier tournaments.
He noted that several of his Portugal teammates, including Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo, currently play for Al Hilal, but Amorim’s confidence in his retention played a role in the outcome.
