Europe risks becoming a digital colony dominated by American and Chinese technology unless the continent rapidly develops its own independent artificial intelligence infrastructure, Swiss tech publisher Bruno Giussani warned in an interview. In an NZZ am Sonntag report, the former global curator and European director of TED Talks called for resistance against the corporate control that dictates modern digital infrastructure.
Growing Concerns Over Tech Monopolies
Giussani clarified that his concerns are focused on the visions and behaviors of the individuals and corporations behind technology rather than the technology itself. He pointed out that while smartphones appear to be harmless pieces of hardware, they conceal an overarching system of influence, exploitation, and manipulation.
The Mechanics of Chatbots and Societal Control
Addressing the ideological programming of automated systems, Giussani noted similarities between American and Chinese chatbots. He explained that when asked how to build a bomb in a kitchen, an American chatbot refuses to answer, whereas a Chinese chatbot declines to answer what happened at Tiananmen Square in 1989. While Westerners often view the first response as responsible and the second as censorship, Giussani emphasized that both instances rely on the same underlying mechanism: Die Maschine ist programmiert, bestimmte Dinge zu sagen und andere nicht.
Because artificial intelligence is becoming omnipresent, it leads to a total redesign of society and human thought.

Rejecting the Luddite Label
Responding to comparisons with 19th-century Luddites who opposed industrialization, Giussani rejected the notion that he is an opponent of new technology, advocating instead for a skeptical and watchful approach.
