Brussels Approves Mercosur Trade Deal Despite French Opposition

Brussels Approves Mercosur Trade Deal Despite French Opposition

January 10, 2026 Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor World

Negotiated since 1999, this agreement creates one of the largest ‍free trade zones in the world, ⁤between the European Union, ⁤Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, representing more than 700 million consumers.
Opponents argue that it⁤ will destabilize European agriculture with cheaper products that are not necessarily compliant with EU standards, due⁣ to insufficient controls.
Its‍ proponents, such as Germany and Spain, believe that it⁤ will instead revitalize a slowing European ⁣economy,‍ boosting exports of cars, ⁢machinery, wines and ⁤cheeses thanks to reduced tariffs.
Conversely, it‌ facilitates the entry of South American beef, poultry, sugar, rice, honey and soybeans into Europe, with quotas of duty-free products, so the grumbling ⁢of farmers in the affected‌ sectors.
this morning, European ⁢states approved‌ (by qualified majority) this treaty. But it‌ will ⁣still be necessary for Euro MPs to ‌ratify‌ it before⁣ the end⁢ of the month. This vote is scheduled in Strasbourg on January⁤ 20,it is a small hope for France to ⁢see this text suspended. Details from⁣ Fabien Cazeaux in ‌brussels.

The vote ‍could be‍ tight,at a time when agricultural protests are intensifying and well beyond French borders, including in Poland,Belgium,Germany,Italy…

To ⁤sign the trade agreement with Mercosur, the European Union has made a series of ‍concessions to farmers in recent months: such‍ as guarantees on sensitive products, strengthened “safeguard” measures for beef, poultry, rice, honey, eggs, ethanol or sugar.
Last Wednesday, it ⁢announced⁤ a total ban on ‌three ‌substances, three ⁤pesticides

Germany Prioritizes Trade‍ Benefits in EU-Mercosur Deal

germany appears to⁤ have moved forward with ⁣the EU-mercosur trade agreement despite concerns about its impact on its ⁣relationship ‌with france, ⁤driven by ⁢anticipated ⁣economic gains for key German ⁤industries. Sébastien Baer, reporting⁤ from Berlin, indicates Germany stands to ⁤be the primary beneficiary of the deal and welcomes the forthcoming commercial opportunities.

The agreement provides ⁣relief, particularly for the⁢ automotive industry, the machinery sector, and the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, all of which are currently facing⁣ difficulties.

Further details regarding the⁤ specific benefits ‌and potential impacts are ⁢expected from reporting by Sébastien Baer in Berlin.
