Bryce Harper’s Elbow injury Keeps Phillies on Edge
Updated May 30, 2025
Philadelphia Phillies fans are anxiously awaiting the return of Bryce Harper, who remains day-to-day with a bruised right elbow. The Phillies’ first baseman sustained the injury Tuesday after being struck by an Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider’s 95 mph fastball.
X-rays revealed no fracture, but Harper described the area as “still super sore.” He has yet to resume batting practice. The two-time National League MVP is approaching his recovery cautiously, emphasizing the need to be smart about his return to the lineup. This injury impacts the Phillies’ lineup and their strategy moving forward.
Harper, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2022, is notably sensitive about his elbow. He intends to wear a protective guard on his right elbow once he’s back on the field. Finding a cozy brace has proven challenging.
“I’m not sure when I’m going to play again,” Harper said Friday. “It hit me in a pretty bad spot… I just want to be smart about it,too.”
Despite the setback, Harper doesn’t believe Strider intentionally threw at him. Phillies manager Rob Thomson shares this sentiment and doesn’t anticipate Harper landing on the injured list. Thomson said the focus is on reducing the swelling and ensuring Harper is pain-free before he returns.
Before Friday’s game against Milwaukee, harper participated in fielding drills at first base but refrained from throwing or swinging a bat. This season, Harper is batting .267 with eight home runs and 33 rbis in 54 games. Alec Bohm has shifted to first base in Harper’s absence, with Edmundo Sosa taking over at third.
What’s next
The Phillies will continue to monitor Harper’s progress daily, hoping for a swift recovery and return to the lineup. The team’s performance in the coming games will depend on how well they can adjust to Harper’s absence and the new defensive alignment.
