Leadership Transition at Coal India
B. Sairam assumed the position of Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Coal India Limited (CIL) on Monday, december 15, 2023. He succeeded Sanoj Kumar Jha, Additional secretary in the Ministry of Coal, who had been serving in an interim capacity as November 1, 2023, following the retirement of P.M. Prasad on October 31, 2023.
Sairam’s Background and Experience
Prior to this appointment, Sairam served as the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Northern Coalfields limited (NCL), a subsidiary of Coal India. He also held the position of Director (Technical) at Central Coalfields Limited, another CIL arm.
sairam brings over 35 years of experience in the coal sector, encompassing mine operations, planning, logistics, and regulatory affairs. He holds a degree in mining engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Raipur, and an MBA in energy management from the NTPC School of Business.
Focus Areas for Coal India
In his initial statement, Sairam emphasized that increasing coal production and enhancing the quality of coal supplies will be central to coal India’s strategy in meeting the country’s energy demands. He also highlighted the company’s expansion into new areas, including solar power, coal gasification, and the acquisition of critical minerals, alongside a continued commitment to sustainable mining practices.

Coal India is a dominant force in India’s coal production, accounting for over 80% of the nation’s domestic output. The company plays a crucial role in supplying fuel to the power sector and other key industries.
