BSU Women’s Hockey Faces Minnesota State in Road Series
Beavers Back on the Ice, Ready to Face Ranked Rival Minnesota State
Bemidji, MN – After a 19-day hiatus, the Bemidji State women’s hockey team is eager to return to the ice this weekend for a crucial road series against WCHA rival Minnesota State. The Mavericks, currently receiving votes in national polls and boasting two top-5 wins this season, present a formidable challenge for the Beavers.
The Beavers last saw action against the 4th-ranked Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, where they were swept in a tough series. While the team has been diligently practicing during the break, the excitement for real game action is palpable.
“We did a little green-and-white scrimmage on Saturday, but [it’s] not the same,” said BSU Head Coach Amber Fryklund. “our small area games in practice have been getting pretty competitive lately, which is great. That just elevates everyone. But certainly Monday morning as a staff, we all came to the rink and it was like, ‘Let’s go, it’s game week.’ That was kind of our opening message to our team this week too, ‘It’s game week!'”
Sophomore forward Shelby Sandberg echoed the team’s eagerness and respect for their upcoming opponent. “We know that they’ve won against some tough opponents,” Sandberg said. “I think we’re not going to underestimate them at all. And we’re going to bring all that we have as it would be really good to get a win against a tough opponent like Minnesota State.”
Last season, the Beavers split their home series against the Mavericks but were swept in Mankato. Securing a win in Mankato this weekend would be a significant accomplishment for Bemidji state, marking their first victory there since November 2019.
