– What are the key challenges faced by the Boston University Women’s Hockey Team after their recent loss to Princeton?
Interview with Tara Watchorn, Head Coach of Boston University Women’s Hockey Team
Interviewer: Thank you for joining us, Coach Watchorn. It was a tough game against Princeton, culminating in an 8-1 defeat. What are your immediate thoughts following that match?
Tara Watchorn: Thank you for having me. It was certainly a challenging game for us. We went into the matchup with confidence after a strong start to our season, but we struggled to maintain our composure and execution, especially after the 11-day break. There were several lessons to take away from this game, and we need to focus on those to move forward.
Interviewer: In the first period, things seemed relatively even, with you outshooting Princeton. What shifted for the team after that initial spark?
Tara Watchorn: Yes, in the first period, we indeed had some bright moments—Callie Shanahan made some crucial saves and our offense was generating shots. However, as the game progressed, we fell into a defensive rut and allowed Princeton to capitalize on their opportunities. Their early goals in the second period really set the tone and we struggled to respond effectively.
Interviewer: Special teams played a significant role for Princeton. What can you say about your team’s performance in that area?
Tara Watchorn: Special teams can often be a deciding factor in a game, and yesterday it certainly impacted us. We need to review our penalty kill strategies and ensure we’re tighter defensively when we’re down a player. It’s all about execution, and we have room to improve in that area.
Interviewer: Despite the heavy loss, there were moments where your players showed their skill, particularly with Julia Shaunessy and Kaileigh Quigg combining for a goal. What are your thoughts on their performance?
Tara Watchorn: I was pleased to see some offensive spark, especially from Shaunessy and Quigg. It showed that they have the ability to create scoring chances. However, we need to be more consistent throughout the game. We have to capitalize on these moments and build momentum instead of letting the momentum slip away after scoring.
Interviewer: Looking ahead, you have a break before facing the Black Bears. What steps do you plan to take in preparing the team for that matchup?
Tara Watchorn: We’ll be taking this time to analyze the game footage, identifying both our strengths and the areas we need to improve. It’s critical we focus on our defensive structure and scoring on rebounds during practices. We are looking to reset and come back strong against Maine.
Interviewer: Thank you for your insights, Coach Watchorn. Best of luck as you prepare for your upcoming games.
Tara Watchorn: Thank you! We appreciate the support.
Despite the loss, BU’s Julia Shaunessy and Kaileigh Quigg combined to score, making it 5-1. However, Princeton quickly responded, scoring three more goals. The game ended with Princeton dominating 8-1.
BU outshot Princeton 45-32 but could not capitalize on their chances. Watchorn emphasized the need for improvement in scoring on rebounds. The Terriers will take a break before facing the Black Bears in Orono, Maine on December 6. Watchorn looks forward to analyzing the game and resetting the team for the next challenge.
