Buffett Donates $6B in Berkshire Stock ⁣to Charity

Warren Buffett, the 94-year-old CEO of ⁢Berkshire Hathaway, has announced his largest annual donation‍ yet, giving away $6 ‍billion of his company’s stock to the Gates Foundation adn four family charities.

This ⁤donation, ‍delivered on Monday, includes 9.43 ⁢million shares⁤ to the Gates Foundation, along⁤ with 943,384 shares to the ‍Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation. Additionally, 660,366 shares will go to each of⁣ three charities led by his ⁢children: the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, Sherwood Foundation, and NoVo Foundation.

Buffett began his philanthropic giving in ⁢2006, pledging‍ to donate the majority of his wealth to charity through five foundations. The Oracle⁤ of Omaha ⁢converted 8,239⁣ A shares into 12,358,500 B shares to donate ⁢12,358,321 shares of Berkshire Hathaway “B” stock.

A shares, the original stock ⁣issued by Berkshire Hathaway, hold ⁤high value⁣ and voting power. B shares were created in⁢ 1996 to enable smaller investors to own Berkshire stock. Despite his significant‍ donations,⁣ Buffett⁢ maintains control of Berkshire⁤ through his A shares.

Even ‍after donating tens of billions of dollars,Buffett⁢ still⁣ owns 13.8% of⁣ Berkshire’s stock. Prior to this donation, his net worth was estimated⁣ at ‍$152 billion, making him the world’s fifth-richest person, according to Forbes magazine.

Since he began donating in 2006, Buffett has given Berkshire B shares valued at approximately $60 billion, exceeding his entire net worth at the time. He has ⁣not bought ⁣or sold any A or B shares since than, and does not intend to do so.

“Nothing extraordinary has occurred at Berkshire; a very long runway, simple and generally sound decisions, the American tailwind and compounding effects produced my current wealth,” buffett said.⁢ “My ⁣will provides ⁤that⁤ about 99% of my estate is destined for philanthropic⁤ usage.”

Buffett plans⁣ to step down as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway by the⁢ end of the year, with ⁤Greg Abel, the company’s vice⁤ chairman, expected to succeed him. Abel, 62, has served as vice chair since 2018.
