canyon, TX – The West Texas A&M Buffaloes men’s basketball team started the new year with a heart-stopping 74-71 overtime victory over the Texas A&M International Dustdevils on Monday afternoon.
The game was a back-and-forth affair throughout, with neither team able to pull away. with under a minute remaining in regulation, the Dustdevils took a lead only to see freshman guard Amir mcmillian drive the length of the court for a layup, tying the game. A missed TAMIU floater and a defensive rebound set up a final shot for the Buffs, but it wouldn’t fall, sending the game into overtime.
Overtime saw more of the same intensity. McMillian opened the scoring before the Dustdevils knotted the score once again. With just under two minutes to play, McMillian drew a foul on a floater and calmly sank the free throw to give WT a three-point lead.
Two clutch free throws from senior guard Zach Pagotto with under 40 seconds left put the Buffs up by one. The Dustdevils called a timeout with 12 seconds remaining, setting up a final play. Though, a missed three-pointer and two jumpers that wouldn’t fall sealed the victory for the Buffs.
“It was a tough, hard-fought game,” said Head Coach Tom Brown. “Our guys showed a lot of resilience and made some big plays down the stretch.”
McMillian led the Buffs with 19 points, while Pagotto added 16.
The win improves WT’s record to 8-4 on the season and extends their all-time series lead against TAMIU to 5-1.
