Strengthening Bilateral Ties: Burundi and China Collaborate on Infrastructure Development
China First Highway Engineering Co. Ltd (HFHEC), a renowned construction company, has been actively involved in Burundi’s public works since the 1970s. Their expertise in building railways, bridges, roads, and other strategic infrastructure has been instrumental in the country’s development. Notably, HFHEC was also responsible for constructing the Gasenyi Presidential Palace.
During a recent visit, His Excellency the President of the Republic of Burundi was briefed on HFHEC’s projects in China and Africa. The President expressed Burundi’s interest in undertaking large-scale public works, particularly in light of the country’s vision to become an emerging nation by 2040 and a developed nation by 2060.
Exploring Mineral Resources and Energy Production
The President also visited BTEA, a Chinese company specializing in exploring, exploiting, and transforming mineral resources, as well as producing energy from various sources, including hydroelectric, solar, wind, and nuclear energy. BTEA’s commitment to working transparently and collaboratively with Burundians was well-received.
His Excellency President NDAYISHIMIYE praised the quality of BTEA’s services and invited the company to establish industries in Burundi, contributing to the country’s emergence. He highlighted Burundi’s strategic geographical position, which makes it a bridge between East Africa, Central Africa, and South Africa.
Establishing a Joint Team for Collaboration
A joint team, led by Ir Ibrahim UWIZEYE, the Minister of Hydrology, Energy and Mines, and the CEO of BTEA, is being established to accelerate collaboration in the areas of energy and mining. This team will work together to identify areas of mutual interest and develop strategies for cooperation.
The President extended an invitation to BTEA to participate in a high-level Round Table discussion in Bujumbura, aimed at mobilizing financial resources to support the launch of Burundi’s vision.
