Severe Winter Conditions Grip Bulgaria

Bulgaria is bracing for continued severe winter weather, with widespread snowfall, icy conditions, and dangerously low temperatures forecast across the country. Multiple weather warnings are in effect as of Monday, February 2, 2026.

A yellow code has been issued for significant frost across Northern Bulgaria, with temperatures expected to plummet as low as -14 degrees Celsius in some areas. This warning, according to reports, covers the entirety of the country with the exception of the Blagoevgrad region. The cold snap follows a period of heavy snowfall experienced on February 1st, which has already created hazardous travel conditions.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) has issued a yellow code for dangerous weather conditions covering almost the entire country. Warnings remain in place for icy conditions, indicating a continued risk of slippery roads and potential disruptions to transportation.

The cold weather is not limited to Bulgaria. Romania is also experiencing a week of heavy rain and cold, with red alerts issued in three counties.

The Black Sea coast is also expected to experience challenging conditions. Details regarding specific forecasts for the coastal region were not immediately available, but residents and visitors should anticipate cold temperatures and potential disruptions.

These weather conditions follow earlier warnings issued throughout the winter season. In late January, warnings were in place for low temperatures. Prior to that, in late November, Bulgaria issued warnings for heavy rainfall. October also saw storms bringing heavy rain, snow, and flood risks to the country.

Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution, particularly when traveling, and to be prepared for potential disruptions to daily life. The ongoing severe weather conditions highlight the challenges posed by winter in Bulgaria and the importance of heeding official weather warnings.
