Seo Kyung-deok, a professor at Sungshin WomenS University, reports that counterfeit versions of Samyang Foods’ Bulgogi Stir-fry, a popular product domestically and internationally, are being sold globally.
According to Professor Seo’s Facebook post, numerous overseas netizens have reported the issue, with multiple social media posts already addressing the problem.
Professor Seo shared a photo of a product featuring a Korean phrase, Nuclear Bulgogi Fried Noodle.
He noted the similarities in the wrapping paper’s characters and fonts, along with the presence of KOREA Mark
and Halal Mark,
making it challenging for international consumers to differentiate between authentic and fake products.
He pointed out that the counterfeit product uses the name Bingoon
instead of the Samyang Food Mark and is labeled Made in PRC
on the back.
In 2021, major food companies, including Samyang Foods, CJ CheilJedang, Ottogi, and Grand Prize, formed a joint council to combat counterfeit K-food products and initiated legal action against Chinese companies for intellectual property rights infringement.
Professor Seo stated that the compensation awarded by the Chinese court was considered insufficient compared to the actual damages incurred by each company. He urged the Korean government to actively support Korean companies in protecting their intellectual property rights abroad.
He also warned that the proliferation of these counterfeit products could negatively impact the positive image of K-food worldwide.
