Even a lifetime spent working with animals doesn’t guarantee safety around them. That’s the hard-won lesson Jarlath Sutton,a veterinarian based at Sliabh Luachra Veterinary Centre in Rathmore,County Kerry,is sharing after a harrowing bull attack on his family farm in Tipperary a few weeks ago – on August 28,2025.
A Wake-Up Call for a seasoned Professional
Dr. Sutton, who has dedicated his career to animal health, sustained two broken ribs and five fractured vertebrae in the incident. While thankfully recovering well, the experience served as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with livestock. “It was a wake-up call,” Dr. Sutton stated, emphasizing the need for constant vigilance.
The attack underscores a critical point often overlooked: familiarity can breed complacency. Even those with extensive experience, like Dr. Sutton, are not immune to the potential dangers posed by large animals.
Preventative Measures and Farmer Vigilance
Dr. Sutton’s experience highlights the importance of proactive safety measures on farms. These include ensuring secure fencing, providing cattle with adequate space, and being mindful of their behavior, particularly during breeding season or when they are protecting their young.
Farmers are encouraged to regularly assess potential hazards and implement appropriate safety protocols. A report by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) consistently identifies cattle as a significant source of farm-related injuries and fatalities in Ireland.
Complacency is the enemy of safety. Always treat cattle with respect and maintain a safe distance.
