As Team India embarks on its new World test Championship (WTC) cycle against england, the spotlight is on how the team will manage the workload of pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah. With veterans like virat Kohli,Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin nearing retirement, head coach Gautam Gambhir and new captain Shubman Gill face intense scrutiny as they prioritize preserving their key bowler.

Bumrah, recently featured in all five Tests against Australia, is returning from a back injury. He will only participate in three of the five matches against England. Gambhir confirmed this decision before the team’s departure, echoing chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who cited medical advice.
Former National Cricket Academy (NCA) head physiotherapist Ashish Kaushik emphasized that managing a fast bowler’s workload is more complex than simply counting overs. He told SportsBoom.com that the acute to chronic workload ratio is crucial for every player. Exceeding or falling below this threshold increases the risk of injury.Workload encompasses bowling, fielding, and training, not just match play.
“Ther is an acute to chronic workload ratio for every player. Going above or below that threshold increases injury risk. Workload includes bowling, fielding, training — not just match play.”

Kaushik, who aided Bumrah’s recovery from a stress fracture in 2019, cautioned that under-planning can be as detrimental as overuse. He advised support staff to ensure adequate player recovery through sleep, nutrition, and emotional well-being, which keeps players fresh and reduces injury risks. He also stressed the importance of maintaining training intensity to build the strength bowlers need for multiple spells.
“As much as you can be over-bowled,you can be under-bowled too. Bodies must stay in the ‘safe zone’ — conditioned to the level expected in match intensity.”
