World Bank’s Mission 300 Initiative: Burkina Faso’s Commitment to Affordable and Clean Energy
On the sidelines of the 2024 Annual Meeting of the World Bank, held in Washington between October 21 and 26, 2024, the Minister of Energy, Mines and Quarries, Yacouba Zabré GOUBA, presented the national Energy agreement, highlighting the country’s commitment to the Mission 300 initiative.
What is the Mission 300 Initiative?
The Mission 300 (M300) is an initiative by the World Bank and the African Development Bank (AfDB) that aims to provide access to electricity for 300 million Africans by 2030 through agile financing and strong and diverse partnerships.
Burkina Faso’s Energy Agreement
The agreement for Burkina Faso is based on the energy agreement for the African region and reflects the commitment of the Government of Burkina Faso to take the essential measures necessary to achieve affordable, reliable, and clean energy services, significantly increasing the proportion of renewable energy in its energy mix.
The agreement presented by Minister GOUBA describes the challenges to be met to achieve the objectives and a credible action plan to meet these challenges.
Objectives of the Mission 300 Initiative in Burkina Faso
The M300 initiative will allow Burkina Faso to:
- Increase its production capacity, especially in rural areas through renewable energy;
- Increase the rate of access to electricity from 26% to 90% by 2030;
- Improve the quality of the electricity supply service by stabilizing the network and reducing the number of outages;
- Increase the rate of use of clean cooking equipment in households;
- Improve the regulatory framework of the energy sector for better attraction to the private sector.
