Burlington police are investigating after a bear was found with a gunshot wound and dumped in a residential area, according to Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) officials. The incident occurred in the town of Burlington on June 12, 2026, and prompted a prompt response from local authorities.

The bear, described as a male and estimated to be between 2 and 3 years old, was discovered by a passerby near a wooded area off Route 128 just after 2 p.m. on the day of the incident. A DEEP spokesperson confirmed the animal was "non-responsive" and had an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Wildlife officials arrived at the scene and transported the bear to a state facility for a necropsy, which is expected to determine the cause of death and whether the wound was inflicted by a human.

"Any act of cruelty toward wildlife is deeply concerning and will be thoroughly investigated," said DEEP Commissioner Laura K. Smith in a statement. "We are working closely with local law enforcement to identify those responsible and ensure accountability."

Burlington Police Chief Michael R. Delgado confirmed the department is treating the case as a potential criminal matter. "This is a serious offense that violates state laws protecting wildlife," Delgado said. "We are following all leads and encouraging anyone with information to come forward."

The incident has raised questions about poaching activity in the region. According to a 2025 report by the Connecticut Forest and Park Association, the state has seen a 15% increase in reported wildlife-related crimes over the past five years, with poaching and illegal hunting accounting for a significant portion. However, no direct link has been established between this case and broader trends.

Local residents expressed shock at the discovery. "It’s heartbreaking to think someone would do this," said Sarah Thompson, a Burlington resident who lives near the site. "This area is full of nature, and it feels like a violation of that."

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has not yet released details about the bear’s origin or whether it was a protected species. State law prohibits the killing of bears without a permit, and violations can result in fines up to $5,000 or imprisonment.

A DEEP representative noted that the agency is reviewing surveillance footage from nearby areas and has contacted federal wildlife officials for assistance. "This is a priority for us," the spokesperson said. "We take all threats to wildlife seriously and will pursue every avenue to find those responsible."

The case has also sparked discussions about wildlife conservation in Connecticut. The state’s bear population has grown significantly in recent decades, with an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 bears as of 2025, according to the Connecticut Department of Agriculture. While hunting is regulated, the increasing human-wildlife interactions have led to calls for stricter enforcement of conservation laws.

"We need to ensure that our natural resources are protected for future generations," said Rep. James E. Rivera (D-Burlington), who has sponsored legislation to increase penalties for wildlife crimes. "This incident is a stark reminder of the challenges we face in balancing development with conservation."

Burlington residents are being urged to report any suspicious activity. A tip line has been established through the DEEP, and authorities are offering a reward for information leading to an arrest.

As the investigation continues, the case remains under review by both state and local agencies. A final report from the necropsy is expected within the next two weeks, which could provide further insight into the circumstances surrounding the bear’s death.
