Burnley interim manager Mike Jackson has expressed frustration over the missed red card for Arsenal forward Kai Havertz in their 1-0 Premier League defeat at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, May 18, 2026.

Jackson, who took charge of Burnley following the departure of former manager Vincent Kompany, praised his side’s resilience in keeping the game close despite the defeat. However, he criticized the referee’s decision-making, particularly in the second half.

The match saw Burnley push Arsenal hard, with Havertz drawing a yellow card in the first half for a late challenge on Burnley defender Ashley Westwood. Jackson later suggested that Havertz should have received a second yellow and subsequent red card for his actions in the second half, though no further disciplinary action was taken.

Burnley’s performance came as a surprise to many, given their struggles in the league this season. The Clarets had won just three of their last eight matches before the fixture, sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League table. However, their defensive organization and set-piece threat—particularly from striker Ashley Westwood—kept Arsenal at bay for much of the game.

Arsenal, meanwhile, continued their inconsistent form under new manager Mikel Arteta, who has faced criticism for his team’s defensive frailties. Despite controlling possession, the Gunners struggled to break down Burnley’s midfield and were forced to rely on individual brilliance from Havertz and Bukayo Saka to create chances.

Jackson’s comments came in a post-match press conference, where he also addressed the importance of maintaining belief among the squad despite the result. “We kept them in the game, and that’s something to be proud of,” he said. “But there were moments where I felt the referee didn’t fully appreciate the seriousness of some challenges. Kai Havertz was lucky to escape with just a yellow in the first half, and in the second half, I genuinely believe he should have been sent off.”

Burnley now look to build on their improved defensive displays in their next fixture, a home match against West Ham United on May 25. The result against Arsenal has reignited discussions about Burnley’s potential for a late-season resurgence, particularly if they can continue to challenge top-six teams.

For Arsenal, the defeat adds to growing concerns about their ability to maintain consistency in the title race. With Manchester City and Liverpool pulling away in recent weeks, the Gunners’ form has become a key talking point ahead of the final stretch of the season.

No further disciplinary action was taken against Havertz following the match, and Arsenal have yet to comment on Jackson’s remarks. The Premier League will review the incident as part of their standard post-match procedures.
