Burns Brothers: From Corporate to Global Entrepreneurs
The Burns Brothers: Building Bridges and Defining Legacy
For Michael and John Burns, a pivotal moment arrived during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and the protests following George Floyd’s murder. This sparked a profound question about ensuring a better future for their young sons, leading them to leave successful corporate careers and launch “The Burns brothers.”
What began as a response to a critical need has rapidly evolved into a multifaceted business encompassing hospitality, marketing, events, and talent advancement, with a growing presence from Washington D.C. to Kenya. The core mission, however, remains consistent: creating inclusive spaces for Black professionals and fostering connections with Africa.
Driven by a childhood steeped in entrepreneurial spirit - inspired by their mother’s success in building a large pediatric practice – the brothers initially focused on helping corporations authentically connect with their Black employees. This evolved into a four-pronged approach: consulting, marketing (Manchester Park), event creation, and the establishment of HQ, a membership club designed as a safe and empowering “house” for Black professionals.
HQ addresses a critical need for spaces where Black professionals can shed the pressures of navigating predominantly white spaces and simply be themselves. The brothers recognized the importance of providing a haven where authenticity is celebrated, and armor isn’t required.
The dynamic partnership between Michael and John is a key to their success. Michael, with a background in the army and corporate leadership, focuses on operations and strategy. john, leveraging his legal expertise and interpersonal skills, drives business development and innovation. This complementary skillset allows them to effectively scale their vision.
Currently, The Burns Brothers are expanding their offerings with the launch of “the Continuum of Change,” a framework for lasting change through a seven-step process of listening, understanding, connecting, acting, aligning, assessing, and adjusting. Thay are also introducing The Nomad, a unique coffee lounge-to-cocktail bar concept, and exploring a franchise model for their hospitality ventures.
looking beyond business, Michael harbors a notable aspiration: to support Maryland Governor Wes Moore in a potential presidential run, viewing it as an possibility to inspire future generations.Ultimately, the Burns Brothers aim to leave a legacy of empowerment, awareness, and opportunity, bridging the gap between Black America and Africa, and ensuring that their success is felt by those who previously felt excluded.
Their vision is to be remembered not just for their achievements, but for their ability to inspire others to see themselves reflected in their story.
