Burns’ U.S. Open Role Hampered by Water Relief Dispute

Updated june 15,2025

OAKMONT,Pa. — ⁤Sam Burns’ bid for a major victory at the U.S. Open took a hit ⁤Sunday when rules officials denied him ‍relief from casual water on the‌ 15th hole. Burns,⁤ who began the day⁢ in the lead, finished tied for seventh at ⁤4-over.

The incident occurred⁢ after Burns’ shot landed in a waterlogged⁢ section of⁢ the‍ fairway, the result of heavy afternoon⁤ rains.Burns argued that his ‌practice swings produced sprays of water, warranting relief. Though, after consulting with two USGA ‌officials,⁤ his request ⁢was denied.

Forced to play the ball as it lay, Burns struggled, sending his shot into the rough. He ended up ‌with a double-bogey on the hole, dropping him two shots behind the lead.

Adam Scott, Burns’ playing partner, noted the challenging conditions. “It was borderline unplayable,” Scott said, adding that the‍ water was very close to the surface.

‍ ⁣ ⁣ “When I walked into it,‌ clearly you could see water coming⁣ up,” burns said. “Took practice swings, ⁣and it’s just ‌water ⁣splashing every single time…Ultimately, it’s not⁤ up to me, it’s up to the rules ⁢official. That’s kind of that.”

Burns⁣ carded an 8-over 78, his worst round of the tournament, which included another double-bogey on⁢ the‌ 11th hole after his tee⁤ shot landed in a divot.

‌ ⁢ “Look,⁣ I went out there ⁣and gave it the best I had,” burns said. “Golf’s a hard game, especially on⁢ this golf course. At the end of the day, I can hold my head high.”
