Burundi Closes Border with DRC Amidst Regional Tensions
Border closure and Military Presence
Burundi has closed it’s border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), specifically the Gatumba and Vugizo border posts, as of Tuesday afternoon. Both crossings have been designated as “military zones” by the Burundian army, according to reports.
the closure follows the entry of the M23 rebel group into Uvira, a strategically importent town near Bujumbura, Burundi’s economic capital. Reports indicate the M23 is receiving support from the Rwandan army.
Regional Context and Ancient Relations
Burundi’s decision to close the border reflects longstanding tensions with Rwanda. Burundi has historically provided military support to the DRC government in Kinshasa, particularly in the eastern regions of the country, further complicating the regional dynamic.
The situation underscores the fragility of security in the Great Lakes region of Africa and the potential for escalation given the complex network of alliances and conflicts.
