Negotiations reach critical point After Six Months
Planned strike action by First West of England bus drivers in Bristol has been suspended while union members are balloted on a new offer from the company. The suspension, announced today,September 27,2024,follows six months of negotiations between First Bus and Unite the Union.
Doug Claringbold, Managing Director of First West of England, stated the company welcomes the suspension and urges the union to continue working towards a mutually acceptable resolution. He acknowledged the disruption strikes cause to passengers and expressed a desire to avoid further action.
Drivers Faced Financial Strain Despite Company Profits
Previous strikes in September saw approximately 600 drivers walk out for four days, highlighting the intensity of the dispute. Unite has emphasized that its members are facing significant financial hardship, with half of their wages being consumed by rent, leaving them unable to save. This comes despite First Bus reporting an operating profit of £204.3 million.
Unite General Secretary Sharon Graham underscored the disparity, stating that First Bus is a highly profitable company while its employees struggle to meet basic living expenses. The union’s position centers on securing a fairer share of the company’s profits for its workforce.
Impact and Future Outlook
The outcome of the union member ballot will determine whether further industrial action will be necessary. The situation reflects a broader trend of labour disputes in the UK, driven by the rising cost of living and concerns over fair wages. A resolution would provide stability for both commuters and employees, and possibly set a precedent for similar negotiations within the wider transport sector.
