James Bourne, the 42-year-old co-founder of Busted and Son of Dork, has announced that he must undergo major surgery intended to extend his life. The musician shared the update via social media on April 4, 2026, following several months of silence regarding his health.

Bourne’s announcement follows a period of significant absence from the public eye and his professional commitments. In September 2025, he was forced to withdraw from Busted’s joint UK and Ireland tour with McFly just 24 hours before the first show in Birmingham. At the time, Bourne stated he was not in good enough health to perform, though he did not disclose the specific nature of his condition.

Health Update and Recovery Goals

In his Instagram Story posted on April 4, 2026, Bourne revealed that a medical plan is now in place. He explained that the upcoming surgical procedure is designed to extend his life and restore his health sufficiently to return to his professional career.

I have a plan in place to have a major surgery that should extend my life and hopefully make me well enough to come back to what I love the most which is touring and making music. It really sucks to be out of the game. But there is hope!

Despite the severity of the update, Bourne has not provided specific details regarding the type of surgery he requires or the exact diagnosis of his illness. This follows a pattern of limited information, as he had previously admitted in September 2025 that he did not yet have all the answers regarding his condition.

Impact on Busted and Tour History

The impact of Bourne’s illness was felt immediately during the 2025 Busted vs McFly tour. Bandmate Matt Willis addressed the situation during live performances, describing Bourne as really fucking sick and noting that his health decline happened fucking fast.

Willis and Charlie Simpson had reportedly offered to cancel the tour entirely to accommodate Bourne’s recovery. However, Bourne gave the band his blessing to proceed with the concerts without him. Willis later told the audience that performing the first show without Bourne felt really weird, but emphasized that health is wealth.

Bourne’s contribution to the music industry extends beyond Busted; he co-wrote the majority of Busted’s first two albums and holds co-writing credits on the first four albums released by McFly.

Busted’s Recent Activity

While Bourne has focused on his medical needs, Busted has remained active in the studio and through various releases. The band released their fourth studio album, Half Way There, in 2019 and a UK Number One Greatest Hits 2.0 compilation in 2023.

In 2024, the trio announced they were collaborating on new music with Jordan Fish, formerly of Bring Me the Horizon. The band described Fish as an extraordinary talent who had pushed them creatively during their studio sessions.

bandmate Charlie Simpson has been linked by fans to the mysterious musical act President, which debuted at Download 2025 and performed in London. President has since announced a 2026 UK and Ireland tour, as well as headline dates in the United States.
