Bringing Lifesaving Blood Services Closer to Communities in Butembo, DRC
Access to safe blood transfusions is becoming more reliable for residents of Butembo, North Kivu, in the democratic Republic of Congo. on August 29, 2024, new, advanced blood sample sites were established at Katwa General Hospital, the secondary reference hospital in Matanda, and the Mukuna Sainte-Famille hospital center in Butembo. This expansion aims to streamline the process for voluntary blood donors and increase the availability of this critical resource.
Dr. Critial Kambale Visangi, the local manager of the blood transfusion center, explained that the primary goal of these new sites is to reduce barriers to donation and bring services directly to the people who can definitely help. This is particularly vital given the escalating demand for blood products in the region.
The need for blood transfusions has been sharply increasing due to ongoing insecurity and armed conflicts in Butembo and surrounding districts. Dr. Kambale visangi noted a concerning trend: “for some time, blood donors have been becoming increasingly rare, while our region has an increasing number of patients needing transfusions, due to the security situation which prevails in almost all districts of the city and its surroundings, as of armed conflicts and massacres.”
this isn’t a new challenge. The Butembo blood transfusion center experienced a severe blood product shortage a year ago, highlighting the fragility of the supply and the urgent need for a sustainable donor base. The new sites represent a proactive step toward addressing this vulnerability and ensuring that life-saving transfusions are available when and where they are needed.
The center is actively working to bolster the ranks of volunteer donors and guarantee a consistent blood supply for the community. Increased access and awareness campaigns are key components of this strategy, aiming to overcome the challenges posed by the volatile security habitat and encourage more people to give the gift of life.
