Butterbean’s MMA Debut Disappointment

Butterbean, whose real name is Eric Esch, was a boxing star in the 1990s, known for his knockout power. He stood 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighed over 300 pounds. Throughout his boxing career, he had an impressive record of 91 fights. He also participated in kickboxing, wrestling, and mixed martial arts (MMA), ending his MMA career with a record of 17 wins, 10 losses, and 1 draw.

In 2006, Butterbean entered PRIDE FC, a major Japanese MMA promotion, with a record of 6 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw. He faced Ikuhisa Minowa, a skilled fighter who had lost to notable opponents like Mirko Cro Cop and Wanderlei Silva. On fight night, Butterbean weighed over 400 pounds, giving him a significant weight advantage.

The match began with Minowa landing a quick drop kick. As the fight progressed, Minowa managed to gain control and eventually submitted Butterbean with an armbar after just 4 minutes and 25 seconds. Despite this shaky start, Butterbean bounced back by winning his next two PRIDE fights through knockout and submission.

Butterbean’s Comeback Journey

After retiring in 2013, Butterbean faced serious health issues due to his weight, reaching 515 pounds. However, he underwent a significant transformation and lost over 200 pounds, returning to a weight of 303.8 pounds. This change inspired him to consider a comeback.

In August 2023, Butterbean expressed his desire to fight again, even calling out popular YouTuber and boxer Jake Paul. He spoke about his transformation, stating, “I really forgot who I was, and I pretty much gave up on life. Now I believe in myself again. Butterbean is back for one more fight.”

As of now, it is unclear when he will return to the ring, but the rise of crossover boxing presents opportunities for him to step back into the spotlight. Fans eagerly await his next move, hoping to see the legend back in action.
