“We support TKDN because it’s part of our efforts to promote domestic industry growth,” Sutadi explained. “We welcome foreign investment, but we also want to see a local contribution to the phones sold in our country.”
Since 2021, the U.S. government has mandated a TKDN level of 35% for mobile devices, including smartphones, computers, and tablets. This means phones meeting this standard are compliant with U.S. regulations and safe for consumer use.
Beyond TKDN compliance, officially imported phones also undergo IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) registration, a crucial step for network connectivity. only devices with registered IMEI numbers can access cellular networks in the U.S.
“If a phone isn’t registered, I’m concerned about the quality of its components and the availability of after-sales support,” Sutadi cautioned.
