Borussia Dortmund is facing a critical juncture regarding the future of center-back Nico Schlotterbeck, as the player has dismissed reports of an imminent contract extension and reportedly received a concrete transfer offer from an unnamed top club.
The situation escalated following the German national team’s friendly match against Ghana on April 3, 2026. During an appearance in the mixed zone, Schlotterbeck described reports that he was close to extending his deal as pure fiction
.
Previous reporting from Sky and Bild had suggested that Schlotterbeck would extend his current contract, which runs until 2027, upon his return from the DFB squad, with only final details remaining. However, Schlotterbeck clarified that negotiations had not reached that stage, noting that he had conducted extensive talks with former sporting director Sebastian Kehl, who is no longer with the club.
Contract Negotiations and Financial Terms
Reports from Sky indicate that a meeting took place on Wednesday between Schlotterbeck and Ole Book, the successor to Sebastian Kehl. During these discussions, Schlotterbeck reportedly sought to improve the terms previously negotiated with Kehl, specifically regarding his salary and the conditions of his release clause.

It has been reported that Borussia Dortmund offered Schlotterbeck an annual salary of €14 million and a guaranteed release clause set at €60 million. The primary point of contention is the timing of that clause; Schlotterbeck is said to be seeking a provision that would allow the release clause to be activated as early as the summer of 2026.
The player has since defended his public comments regarding the extension talks, stating, I can’t please everyone!
Transfer Interest and Club Context
While Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid had previously shown tentative interest in the 26-year-old defender, Sky reports that one unnamed top club has now moved beyond inquiry to deliver a concrete transfer offer.
Schlotterbeck joined Dortmund from Freiburg in the summer of 2022 and has since established himself as one of the most complete center-backs in German football. He has made 142 competitive appearances for the club and is a regular fixture for the German national team.
Despite the tension surrounding the contract, some reports suggest there is no bad blood at the club. Niko Kovač has expressed confidence and stated that the club is doing everything possible to ensure Schlotterbeck remains with BVB.
The club’s current sporting standing provides a positive backdrop to these negotiations. Under Niko Kovač, Dortmund sits second in the Bundesliga standings, having lost only once in the league all season. The team is also on track to qualify for the UEFA Champions League knockout phase.
Strategic Outlook
The outcome of the standoff depends on whether the two parties can agree on the release clause timing. If both sides maintain their current positions, the club faces a scenario where a key defender could be targeted for a move in the upcoming summer window.
Earlier in the 2025/26 season, Sebastian Kehl had emphasized that the club was attempting to convince Schlotterbeck to reaffirm his commitment by highlighting the club’s power, the appreciation the player feels, and the shared goals for the future.
