BYD Shark 6: Specs, Price & Australia Release Date 2026

by Victoria Sterling -Business Editor

The Australian ute market is bracing for a shake-up as BYD prepares to launch upgraded versions of its Shark 6 plug-in hybrid pickup, including a highly anticipated 2.0-litre variant. The Chinese automaker is responding to strong initial demand for the Shark 6, which has already disrupted the traditionally conservative ute segment, and aiming to broaden its appeal to fleet buyers and those requiring greater towing capacity.

The original Shark 6, launched to considerable fanfare, boasts a 1.5-litre turbocharged hybrid engine producing 321kW of power and 650Nm of torque. However, the forthcoming upgrades, expected around mid-2026, will introduce a more powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged plug-in hybrid powertrain. This new engine is projected to deliver a significant increase in towing capacity, jumping to 3500kg – a key requirement for many commercial and private ute buyers.

Beyond the engine upgrade, BYD is also planning to expand the Shark 6 lineup with the addition of a cab-chassis variant. Pricing for the cab-chassis model has already been revealed, starting at $55,900 before on-road costs, making it $2,000 cheaper than the existing pick-up version. This move directly targets fleet sales, offering businesses a versatile and technologically advanced platform for custom builds.

The enhancements don’t stop at power and versatility. BYD is also focusing on off-road capability. The upgraded Shark 6 is expected to feature locking differentials – both front and rear – and a two-speed rear transmission with a low-range crawl gear. These additions, potentially sourced from the B5 platform, will significantly improve the ute’s performance in challenging terrain. Ground clearance remains competitive at 230mm, with approach, departure, and passing angles of 31°, 19.3°, and 17° respectively.

Range is also set to improve. While the current model offers a combined driving range of 800km per tank, the upgraded Shark 6 is targeting an electric-only range of up to 300km. This extended electric range will appeal to environmentally conscious buyers and those seeking to minimize fuel costs.

Safety features remain a priority for BYD. The Shark 6 already includes an advanced driver-assistance system with autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and rear cross-traffic alert. It also boasts seven SRS airbags and child presence detection, demonstrating a commitment to passenger safety.

The success of the Shark 6 has already been recognized within the automotive industry. Wheels magazine recently crowned the Shark 6 its first-ever Ute of the Year, a testament to its innovative design and compelling value proposition.

BYD Australia’s COO, Stephen Collins, has indicated that the company is actively pursuing fleet sales as a key growth area. The introduction of the cab-chassis variant is a direct response to this strategy, providing businesses with a practical and cost-effective solution for their transportation needs.

The architecture of the Shark 6 is also a key differentiator. The integrated battery architecture increases rigidity by up to 22% and enhances load capacity. The ground-breaking longitudinal EHS layout in the plug-in hybrid vehicle, combined with a dedicated rear drivetrain assembly, further sets the Shark 6 apart from its competitors.

While BYD has experienced initial success with drive-away pricing on the Shark 6, along with the Sealion 6 PHEV SUV and Sealion 7 EV, the long-term pricing strategy for the upgraded models remains to be seen. The company is expected to announce detailed pricing information in the coming months, alongside the full specifications of the 2.0-litre variant and the cab-chassis model.

The BYD Shark 6’s rapid ascent in the Australian ute market signals a potential shift in consumer preferences. Its combination of hybrid technology, impressive performance figures, and competitive pricing is challenging the dominance of traditional internal combustion engine utes. The upcoming upgrades are poised to further solidify its position as a major player in this highly competitive segment.
