Nikkei Asia has been honored with the top prize in technology reporting by the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA), placing it among leading global news organizations such as Bloomberg, Reuters, The wall Street Journal and The new York Times. The award recognizes Nikkei Asia’s in-depth coverage of china’s evolving technology landscape and supply chains.
Cheng Ting-Fang, techAsia host, said the award-winning coverage involved hard work and collaboration. One notable project was the creation of a subsea cable map tracing Chinese investment since the 1990s. The project required digging through old Chinese government and telecom documents to identify cables with Chinese participation.
According to Ting-Fang, the project faced a setback when the map data was priced at $20,000, exceeding their budget. However, she negotiated the price down to $800. Lauly Li, Shunsuke Tabeta, and Tsubasa Suruga contributed by interviewing Chinese and foreign executives to gain insights into the subsea cable sector in China and Southeast Asia.
Another standout project highlighted China’s electronics supply chain, pinpointing areas where the nation has developed competitive alternatives to global leaders. The global supply chain has shifted significantly as Huawei was added to the U.S. Entity List six years ago, with China’s localization efforts accelerating rapidly.
A third story examined how China built a competitive advanced display industry, challenging Samsung’s previous dominance.
