BYU Eliminated from Big 12 Championship Race: 2023 Season Update

BYU Eliminated from Big 12 Championship Race: 2023 Season Update

December 1, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor News

BYU Football finds itself eliminated from the Big 12 championship race. This occurred after Iowa State’s victory over Kansas State. Even though there were hopes for BYU, the team did not control its own destiny.

Heading into the last weekend of the regular season, nine teams were competing for a place in the Big 12 championship. Despite BYU’s two recent losses, they remained in contention until Saturday’s results.

Arizona State has secured its spot in the championship game. The Sun Devils won against Arizona, finishing the season with a strong 7-2 conference record.

Other teams still in the running include Colorado and Iowa State, both holding 7-2 records. Each team’s weekend performance impacts who advances to the final game on December 7 in Arlington, Texas.

Several scenarios impacted the standings:

  • Scenario 1: If Arizona State, BYU, Colorado, and Iowa State all win, Arizona State will face Iowa State in the championship game.

  • Scenario 2: If Arizona State, Colorado, and Iowa State win while BYU loses, Arizona State will play against Colorado.

The following teams have been eliminated from the championship contention:

  • BYU: 6-2 record, faced Houston
  • Baylor: 6-3, defeated Kansas
  • Kansas State: 5-3, played Iowa State
  • TCU: 6-3, defeated Cincinnati
  • Texas Tech: 6-3, defeated West Virginia
  • West Virginia: 5-4, lost to Texas Tech

Notably, Kansas, Cincinnati, Houston, Arizona, Utah, UCF, and Oklahoma State were eliminated before this weekend.

BYU’s elimination came after Iowa State’s victory. They could not secure a winning tiebreaker scenario, even if they won against Houston. Baylor was eliminated when Arizona State’s victory guaranteed two teams would outperform them. Kansas State’s chances ended after Baylor’s and Texas Tech’s wins on Saturday. Finally, Colorado’s massive win helped eliminate TCU, Texas Tech, and West Virginia from contention.
