BYU Quarterback Jake retzlaff ⁣Faces Sexual Assault Allegations

⁤ Updated May 21, 2025

BYU quarterback Jake⁤ Retzlaff is facing⁣ accusations ⁣of sexual assault, ‍including rape and strangulation, according to a lawsuit filed in Utah⁢ state court. The plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe A.G., alleges the assault took place at Retzlaff’s residence in November 2023.

The lawsuit claims the woman continues‌ to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder as ‍an inevitable result of the⁢ alleged incident. Retzlaff’s attorney,‍ Mark Baute, refuted the charges, stating his client is ⁤”factually innocent” and intends to ⁣prove it through the legal process. He added⁢ that Retzlaff will remain ⁢focused on football.

BYU acknowledged awareness of the lawsuit and stated the university takes‍ such allegations seriously, adhering to Title IX guidelines. Though, citing privacy⁢ laws, BYU said it would not comment further.

The Provo Police Department released a statement confirming they received a call from a woman in November 2023 with a similar‍ account. The department stated that the woman declined to identify her abuser at the‌ time, leading‍ to the case being closed. They also disputed claims that officers discouraged the victim⁤ from proceeding, emphasizing their ⁤commitment to justice for victims of sexual abuse.

According to the ⁣lawsuit,⁤ the woman and‌ Retzlaff connected on social media in October 2023 and met at his ⁤home in November. The suit details a sequence of events where, after the woman’s friend left, Retzlaff allegedly escalated a‌ situation despite her attempts to‍ stop him. The lawsuit further alleges that Retzlaff sexually assaulted her,⁣ causing her to lose consciousness.

The woman sought medical attention days‍ later, undergoing a rape kit examination and documenting her‌ injuries. She initially withheld Retzlaff’s name from‍ police but later provided ⁤it after being contacted about another complaint against a football ‌player, the lawsuit states.

Retzlaff started four⁤ games for BYU in November 2023 and became the team’s starting quarterback and co-captain for ⁣the‍ 2024 season. He previously transferred to ‌BYU from Riverside City College.

“We look forward to proving that‍ innocence. Jake’s focus this year will ⁢be on football. ‌We don’t try cases‌ in the media, we will respect ‌the process and establish Jake’s innocence through the judicial system.”

Mark Baute, Retzlaff’s attorney

What’s next

the legal proceedings ‍will likely unfold over the coming⁤ months, with⁣ both sides presenting evidence and arguments. Retzlaff is expected to continue playing ⁤football while the case is ‌ongoing, unless ⁤the university or⁤ legal system intervenes.
