Despite an 0-for-5 performance, Jac Caglianone’s presence fueled the Kansas City Royals to a 10-7 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. The Royals rallied from a five-run deficit in Caglianone’s highly anticipated MLB debut.
Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. noted the team’s excitement surrounding Caglianone’s arrival. “Everyone kind of gets excited, and then you go out there and want to do your part,” Witt Jr.said.
Caglianone, batting sixth as the designated hitter, received a warm welcome from fans, many of whom traveled to see the No. 6 overall pick of the 2024 amateur draft.
Caglianone expressed his gratitude for the support. “That was awesome,” caglianone said.”That’s something I’ll definately remember forever. I can’t really thank the people for coming out like that.”
In his first at-bat, Caglianone nearly had a hit, but Cardinals center fielder Victor scott II made a running catch on the warning track. Groundouts in the fifth and seventh innings were snagged by Nolan Arenado, preventing Caglianone from reaching first base.
Manager Matt Quatraro praised Caglianone’s approach. ”He was great in the dugout,” Quatraro said. “He went up there, attacked… He looked poised. There will be plenty of hits for him.”
Reflecting on the experience, Caglianone noted the intensity of the major league surroundings. “The grandstands just keep going up forever it felt like, but it was nice,” Caglianone said.
Prior to his call-up, the 22-year-old Caglianone batted .319 with nine home runs and 43 rbis in 38 games with Triple-A Omaha.
General Manager J.J. Picollo expressed his excitement about Caglianone’s rapid progress. “There was no real need, coming into this year, to see him up in ’25, but he went out and did what you want players to do,” Picollo said.
