Chicago — Kansas City Royals’ rookie jac Caglianone erased any doubts about his early performance with a stellar showing Sunday, going 4-for-4 in the Royals’ 7-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox. The outfielder/first baseman’s perfect game followed a 2-for-21 stretch in his first five major league appearances.
Caglianone singled to center field in the first inning, followed by a double in the fourth with an impressive 113.6 mph exit velocity. He added singles in both the sixth and eighth innings, contributing considerably to the Royals’ offense. This performance highlights Caglianone’s potential as a key player for the Kansas City Royals and a promising MLB slugger.
Manager Matt Quatraro noted Caglianone’s hard-hit balls in previous at-bats that didn’t translate into hits. “Jac’s had 20 at-bats, and he’s squared a bunch of balls up in those 20,” Quatraro said. “Today he got rewarded for it.”
“A huge thanks to all the guys out here in the locker room,” Caglianone said. “They were very supportive through it all. Hitting balls hard, not really much to show for it. Thankfully, they found some grass today.”
The Royals selected Caglianone, 22, as the No. 6 pick in the 2024 amateur draft from the University of Florida. Before his promotion to the majors last week, he hit .322 with 15 home runs and 56 RBIs across two minor league stops.
Caglianone debuted against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday, going 0-for-5. He recorded his first hit, a run-scoring double, in Thursday’s doubleheader against St. Louis and singled against the White Sox on Saturday.
“I can’t wait to see what that guy’s going to do in the big leagues,” catcher Salvador Perez said.”He’s one of the best. That’s a big dude, too, so I think he’s going to do well.”
Perez and shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. are mentoring Caglianone. Witt Jr. is sharing advice daily, focusing on off-the-field aspects like travel preparedness.
What’s next
Caglianone anticipates his home debut against the New York Yankees, expressing more excitement for this event than his initial debut. He looks forward to playing at Kauffman Stadium in front of family, friends, and Royals fans.
