CHICAGO – Cal Raleigh is on a tear. The seattle Mariners’ slugger leads major League Baseball with 31 home runs, a key factor in the team’s recent series win against the Chicago Cubs.
Over the weekend, Raleigh blasted four home runs and drove in six runs against the Cubs. In sunday’s 14-6 victory, where he served as designated hitter, Raleigh had two hits, two walks, and three runs scored. His hot streak includes a .327 batting average with 16 homers and 34 RBIs in his last 29 games.
Raleigh launched a two-run homer off Colin Rea in the first inning at Wrigley Field, a 105 mph shot to center field. He later singled and scored, and walked again in the eighth, eventually scoring on Randy Arozarena’s double.
Mariners manager Dan Wilson praised Raleigh’s approach. “Thirty-one home runs, he just continues to march through history here,” Wilson said. “He’s a smart player…staying right where he needs to stay.”
Raleigh, 28, is the first switch-hitter to reach 30 home runs before the All-Star break. He needs four more to surpass ken Griffey Jr.’s franchise record for pre-break homers.
