The Professional Hockey Writers Association selects the Norris Trophy winner annually, honoring the defenseman who demonstrates the greatest all-around ability throughout the season. Makar, 26, expressed his gratitude, calling it “very cool” and emphasizing the importance of his teammates. He learned of his win during a golf outing in his hometown of Calgary.
Makar joins hockey legends such as Bobby Orr, Denis Potvin, and Paul Coffey as multiple Norris Trophy winners before the age of 27.Erik Karlsson, currently with the Pittsburgh Penguins, also achieved this feat. This year, Makar received 176 of 191 frist-place votes, accumulating 1,861 points. Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets received 13 first-place votes, finishing with 1,266 points. Vancouver canucks captain Quinn Hughes garnered two first-place votes and 918 points. Hughes aimed to be the first repeat winner as Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings, who won three consecutive trophies from 2006-2008.
Makar began the season with a 13-game point streak. His offensive prowess was on full display as he led all NHL defensemen with 30 goals,62 assists, and 92 points, cementing his status as the league’s premier offensive defenseman.
Any time you get recognized for something like this, it’s very cool. It’s very special to be able to (win) this a second time. To have the group of guys that we did — it truly seems cliche to say, but it’s truly a team award.
