Political Consultant Questions Customs Role After Airport detention
Updated June 28, 2025
Rick Taylor, a veteran Los Angeles political consultant, experienced an unexpected delay upon returning from a weeklong vacation in turks and Caicos. Taylor said U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents pulled him aside at Miami International Airport, questioned his California residency, and separated him from his family. He was then placed in a holding room with a group he described as primarily Latino travelers for nearly an hour.
Taylor, 71, who has worked on campaigns for L.A.’s last Republican mayor and current Democratic Sen. alex Padilla, expressed his frustration. He speculated the reason for his detention might have been an Obama-Biden T-shirt in his luggage. His wife and daughter, both Global Entry cardholders, proceeded through security without issue while Taylor, who lacks Global Entry, was detained.
After confirming his Los Angeles residency, an agent placed an orange tag on Taylor’s passport, directing him to a separate line that led to the holding room. Taylor estimated that 95% of the room’s occupants were Latino and primarily Spanish-speaking.
”I know how the system works and have pretty good connections and I was still freaking out,” Taylor said. “I could only imagine how I would be feeling if I didn’t understand the language and I didn’t know anyone.”
Former Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky drew a parallel between Taylor’s experience and Sen. Alex Padilla’s arrest during a press conference with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Yaroslavsky stated the federal government’s operation is “out of control.”
CBP Public Affairs Specialist Alan Regalado encouraged taylor to file a complaint online for review.Taylor, a partner at Dakota Communications, said he is more concerned about future travel with his wife, a Vietnamese-born U.S.citizen.
What’s next
CBP is expected to respond to inquiries regarding the incident next week. Taylor said he hopes his experience will prompt others to reconsider international travel.
