Cal Bears Sweep NCAA Singles Openers in Waco
The California women’s tennis team secured a successful start at the NCAA Singles Championship on Tuesday in Waco, Texas. Lan Mi, Katja Wiersholm, and Mao Mushika each won their first-round matches at Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center, advancing to the round of 32.
In her first NCAA postseason match, senior Lan Mi, ranked 80th, defeated Kaitlyn Carnicella of South Carolina with a score of 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. Katja Wiersholm, the 33rd-ranked player, achieved her first NCAA postseason victory after her opponent, Xin Tong Wang from Wichita State, retired while the score was tied at 4-4 in the first set. Mao Mushika, ranked 107th, also claimed her first postseason win, beating 82nd-ranked Angella Okutoyi from Auburn 6-3, 6-2 in her debut.
The next round features tough matches for the Bears. Mi will face Ohio State’s 23rd-ranked Luciana Perry at 7 a.m. PT, Wiersholm takes on South Carolina’s 10th-ranked Sarah Hamner at the same time, while Mushika competes against Stanford’s fourth-ranked Connie Ma at 9 a.m. PT. In doubles, 16th-ranked Jessica Alsola and Mushika will play against UCLA’s top-seeded duo, Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle, at 2:30 p.m. CT.
Daily matches will continue from Wednesday through Sunday as the championship progresses.
