California Couple Charged in Staged Carjacking Insurance Fraud
A Central California couple is facing felony charges after allegedly staging a carjacking to commit insurance fraud. Martha Gutierrez DeRomero, 57, and Alfredo Ledezma, 57, both of Madera, were arrested after Madera County sheriff’s deputies determined their story didn’t add up.
DeRomero initially reported that on May 23, while en route to a swap meet near Avenue 21 and Road 26 outside Madera, two masked men with knives stole her Chevy van containing $60,000 in fitness merchandise. She claimed the incident occurred when she stopped to adjust her goods.
