California College of the Arts Expansion by Studio Gang: A Creative Hub for Innovation
California College of the Arts Expansion by Studio Gang
Studio Gang, an architecture firm led by Jeanne Gang, has completed an expansion for the California College of the Arts (CCA) in San Francisco. This project connects to the existing main academic building, creating a lively space for learning and collaboration.
Jeanne Gang mentioned that the design aims to foster a dynamic environment for art and design education, encouraging interactions between different disciplines. The expanded campus is expected to enrich CCA’s contribution to San Francisco’s creative community.
The new building covers 82,305 square feet and includes various facilities for art-making, learning, and green spaces. The ground level features workshops for hands-on creative practices and large-scale fabrication. An open layout promotes visibility among various programs, facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration.
Two mass timber pavilions accommodate classrooms and studios and introduce the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts. These pavilions connect to a green terraced landscape and include balconies for informal learning and socializing, allowing the community to enjoy the mild climate of San Francisco.
The structure is among the first mass timber buildings in California, visible in its materiality and design. The building enhances CCA’s connection to the surrounding design district and Bay Area’s artistic culture.
Sustainability is a key focus of the design. The hybrid mass timber structure and minimal finishes reduce the building’s carbon footprint. Strategic planning places heavy equipment on the ground floor, optimizing structural loads and mechanical systems. Passive design elements like self-shading façades help maintain comfortable indoor temperatures.
The project builds on Studio Gang’s involvement in California, which includes various academic and residential buildings in the state. The completed expansion is a testament to the college’s commitment to creativity, innovation, and sustainability in education.
