A crime network based in California is targeting cargo in transit across Arizona, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office. The group has primarily focused on trains transporting high-value goods, but law enforcement officials report a recent shift toward targeting semitrucks.
Chief Deputy Jeff Newnum of the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office stated that the network most frequently targets trains carrying high-value merchandise, such as Nike shoes, as they leave California. The sheriff’s office has been dealing with these types of thefts for several years.
Authorities have now linked the group to a heist that occurred in April 2026. In this instance, the network targeted a semitruck in Ash Fork, a community located near Interstate 40 approximately 50 miles west of Flagstaff. The theft took place while the driver was taking a break.
The Ash Fork incident marked the first case in which the group targeted a tractor-trailer rather than a train. Newnum noted that the crime occurred at a truck stop that was full of other patrons and trucks at the time.
Law enforcement officials described the perpetrators as acting with a high level of confidence. Newnum reported that one of the suspects was captured on video while getting gas at a pump, showing little concern for being recorded.
According to Newnum, the nature of the theft was very, very brazen
, which he indicated demonstrates the level of threat the group poses to the public.
Despite the increasing brazenness of the thefts and the expansion of their targets to include tractor-trailers, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office reported that no one has been injured during these incidents so far.
