Updated May 31, 2025
Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside, calif., has unanimously approved a long-term lease agreement with Sharp HealthCare, based in San Diego. The agreement aims to bolster Tri-City’s financial stability and enhance healthcare services in North County.
Under the terms, Sharp HealthCare will assume Tri-City’s assets and debts, transforming the facility into a key acute care and clinical service hub. This strategic partnership, focused on healthcare services, seeks to address financial challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sharp plans to invest approximately $100 million into Tri-City Medical Center. This investment will help stabilize the hospital’s finances and ensure seismic safety compliance for 175 beds. The plan includes decommissioning a portion of the building that does not meet current standards. Tri-City is currently licensed for about 400 beds.
Because Sharp HealthCare is a private, nonprofit system, the agreement will be subject to a public vote. This measure ensures community involvement in the future of the medical center.
Tri-City previously considered a partnership with UC San Diego Health. However, after nine months of negotiations, the tentative agreement dissolved, prompting Tri-City to re-evaluate all proposals. Both UC San Diego Health and Sharp initially submitted proposals in October 2023, emerging as the frontrunners from a pool of 25 providers.
Patty Maysent, CEO of UC San Diego Health, expressed goodwill following the board’s vote. She stated that her system will continue to collaborate with Tri-city, maintaining a positive relationship despite the outcome.
What’s next
The agreement now moves toward a public vote, where the community will decide on the future partnership between Tri-City Medical Center and sharp HealthCare. The outcome will substantially impact healthcare services and financial stability for the region.
