California AG Sues Sweetwater Care Over Understaffing
Updated June 25, 2025
California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced a lawsuit Tuesday against Sweetwater Care, a San Diego-based
nursing facility chain. The suit alleges the company failed to maintain adequate staffing levels at its 19
California locations, leading to patient harm and violations of state law regarding minimum staffing
requirements.
The Attorney General’s Office contends that a Department of Justice investigation revealed Sweetwater facilities
fell below required staffing levels on more than 14,126 occasions between 2020 and 2024. This chronic
understaffing, the lawsuit claims, resulted in patient neglect as staff were either too few in number or
unwilling to provide necessary care. The lawsuit aims to address the critical issue of nursing home
understaffing and ensure proper patient care.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, some patients wiht serious injuries, including fractured bones, went
days without assessment or medical attention. Others suffered falls and other medical emergencies that were not
addressed promptly. The lawsuit highlights the importance of adequate nursing facility staffing.
“sweetwater and its skilled nursing facilities violated the law and betrayed the trust of communities by failing
to safeguard the health and safety of its residents. This is simply unacceptable,” Bonta said. ”The California
Department of Justice will step in whenever the well-being of patients is at stake. With today’s lawsuit, we
are holding Sweetwater accountable for breaking the law by understaffing its facilities and leaving residents
vulnerable to serious neglect and injuries. No one is above the law, and our vulnerable patients deserve
nothing less than dignity, safety, and high-quality care.”
The lawsuit alleges violations of California’s Unfair Competition Law and seeks monetary penalties,an
injunction to prevent further violations, and the appointment of a compliance monitor.
What’s next
sweetwater officials have not yet commented on the lawsuit. The case will proceed in California courts, where
the Attorney General’s Office will seek to prove its allegations and secure the remedies requested.
