Officials in Huntington Beach, California, have closed ocean waters near the pier following the sighting of an aggressive shark, prompting the suspension of an international surfing competition.

The closure, which extends for approximately one mile in each direction from the pier, was implemented after a shark estimated to be at least 10 feet (3 to 4 meters) in length was observed behaving aggressively in the area on Thursday afternoon, April 23, 2026.

According to event organizers with the Vans Jack’s Surfboard Pro, the beach was closed late on Thursday after the day’s competition had concluded, triggering safety protocols that require a 24-hour closure of the water when a shark is deemed to be acting aggressively.

The World Surf League confirmed that the competition area will remain closed until at least 4:30 p.m. On Friday, April 24, 2026, with plans to reassess conditions and potentially resume the event on Saturday morning, April 25, if the water is deemed safe by authorities.

Huntington Beach Marine Safety officials stated that the closure affects the stretch from Beach Boulevard to 17th Street, emphasizing that public safety is the top priority and urging beachgoers to obey posted signs and remain out of the water until the restriction is lifted.

While the in-water competition has been paused, organizers confirmed that beachside activities associated with the Vans Jack’s Surfboard Pro event are continuing as scheduled during the closure period.

Authorities, including lifeguards and marine safety personnel, are actively monitoring the area for any further shark activity, though officials have not confirmed whether the animal remains in the vicinity or if additional sightings have occurred during the monitoring period.

Although the specific species of the shark has not been confirmed, recent similar incidents in the region have involved great white sharks, according to local marine experts.

The incident underscores ongoing concerns about increased shark activity along the Southern California coast, with marine biologists noting that seasonal patterns may contribute to higher visibility of sharks in nearshore waters during this time of year.
