Calls for Safer Cycling in Belfast After Tragic Death

Belfast is seeing increased calls for safer cycling routes following the death of Gary McMahon, a 58-year-old cyclist. He died after colliding with a lorry in north Belfast. The police are investigating the incident and seek any dash-cam footage.

Nuala McAllister, an Alliance Party MLA, stated that this tragic event should prompt immediate action. She plans to address the issue in the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Anne Madden, policy manager at the charity Sustrans, criticized the current cycling infrastructure in north Belfast, describing it as “really poor.” She noted a lack of safe cycle lanes and highlighted that existing advisory lanes allow cars to park in them, forcing cyclists to maneuver around traffic.

“After my bike ride to work, I text my partner to confirm I arrived alive,” Madden said. She emphasized, “Nobody should have to do that.”

The Department for Infrastructure expressed condolences to McMahon’s family and friends. They confirmed they would assist the police with their investigation and are working on improving cycling infrastructure in line with the Belfast Cycle Network Delivery Plan.

The funeral for Gary McMahon is scheduled for Tuesday.
