Derek Brown, a Saskatoon native who played one NHL game for the Vancouver Canucks, has died in a motorcycle accident. He was 57 years old.

Early Career and NHL Debut
Brown was undrafted out of the Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings. He appeared in a single NHL game for the Vancouver Canucks on March 3, 1990, an 8-0 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks.During that game, Brown accumulated seven minutes in penalties, including a five-minute major for fighting mike Peluso,a known enforcer.
Prolific ECHL Career
while his NHL career was brief, Brown enjoyed a long and successful 16-year professional career spanning the American Hockey League, International Hockey League, and the Czech Extraliga. However,he is best known for his extensive time in the ECHL.
Brown played 789 ECHL games across 13 seasons, the second-most in league history. He scored 206 goals and recorded 293 assists, amassing a total of 2,245 penalty minutes – the second-highest total in ECHL history.
He played for several ECHL teams including the Columbus Chill, Erie Panthers, Baton Rouge Kingfish, and Gwinnett Gladiators.
Post-Playing Career and Hall of Fame Induction
Following his playing career, Brown served as the head coach of the Baton Rouge kingfish during the 2002-2003 season. He briefly came out of retirement the following season before finishing his career with the Gwinnett Gladiators over the next three seasons.
brown’s contributions to the ECHL were recognized with his induction into the ECHL Hall of Fame in 2010, alongside Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender Olaf Kolzig.
