Cambodia & Thailand: Visa-Free Travel & Shorter Visas
Thailand and Cambodia are locked in a visa dispute that’s quickly escalating. Initially, Cambodia shortened visas for Thai visitors to just seven days, spurring a reciprocal reaction. Now, Thailand is considering drastic measures, including cutting off electricity and internet access to Cambodian areas linked to scam centers—a move that could further strain relations. This recent tightening of visa regulations, impacting both land and air travel, reflects growing cross-border tensions. The situation is fluid; though, with News Directory 3 reporting, a Joint Boundary Committee meeting is set for within five days. This suggests the two nations are seeking resolution. Discover what’s next as the negotiations unfold.
Thailand, Cambodia Visa Dispute Escalates Over Internet, Electricity
A reciprocal visa spat between Thailand and Cambodia has intensified, with Thailand considering cutting off electricity and internet services to its neighbour, according to the Foreign Ministry. The dispute began when Cambodia shortened visa validity for Thai visitors, prompting a tit-for-tat response from Thailand.
Nikorndej Balankura, spokesman for the Foreign Affairs Ministry, announced Monday that Cambodia initially reduced the visa stay for Thais arriving by land to seven days.Previously, passport holders could stay for 14 days, and border pass holders for 15.
Thailand retaliated by limiting Cambodian visitors’ stays to seven days, down from 60 days for passport holders and 15 days for border pass holders arriving by land. However, Cambodians arriving by air can still stay in Thailand for up to 60 days. Cambodia plans to increase the stay for Thai visitors arriving by air from 14 to 60 days, effective Tuesday.
The reciprocal visa measure has no set end date, Nikorndej saeid. “Both sides have not set how long this will continue. I think that both can discuss the extension when the situation improves. At this time, the issue is not a priority,” he stated.
Adding another layer to the dispute, Thai security authorities plan to propose to the National Security council disconnecting electricity and internet services to Cambodian areas housing casinos and scam centers. Authorities also aim to control the supply of products that could be misused for technology or transnational crime in Cambodia.

Despite the escalating tensions, the Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman expressed hope that both countries can find peaceful, long-term solutions through bilateral mechanisms. The Joint Boundary Committee is scheduled to meet in five days.
What’s next
The upcoming Joint Boundary Committee meeting offers an opportunity for Thailand and Cambodia to de-escalate tensions and seek mutually agreeable solutions regarding visa policies, cross-border crime, and resource management.
