Camerimage Festival Controversy: CEO’s Offensive Words Lead to Substance Withdrawal
Coralie Fargeat, the director of The Substance, pulled her film from the 2024 Camerimage Film Festival. She made this decision due to “highly misogynistic and offensive” comments from festival CEO Marek Zydowicz.
Fargeat announced her decision on X, stating that the film’s cinematographer, Benjamin Kracun, would also not attend the festival. They emphasized that The Substance addresses harmful behaviors and hope this decision encourages change within the film industry.
Zydowicz faced backlash after his comments about the lack of female cinematographers in previous festival selections. He suggested that increasing female representation might lower artistic quality. His remarks prompted swift condemnation from cinematography guilds. Steve McQueen, who was set to attend the festival, canceled his appearance in light of these comments.
The main competition jury at Camerimage, led by Cate Blanchett, openly supported the festival. They encouraged discussions about gender representation and inclusivity, recognizing the need for genuine change.
The Substance features Demi Moore as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former TV fitness host who uses a secret serum to transform into a younger version of herself, played by Margaret Qualley. The two women must swap identities weekly, leading to unexpected challenges.
